The mating behavior of black ants involves a complex process. When a colony is ready to reproduce, winged male and female ants, known as alates, participate in a nuptial flight. During this flight, they mate in mid-air, after which the males die, and the fertilized females become queens.

The actual mating process is relatively brief. The male ants release spermatozoa into the queen’s reproductive tract. The queen stores this sperm in a specialized organ called the spermatheca. This stored sperm is used by the queen to fertilize eggs throughout her life, enabling her to lay eggs without mating again. This process helps the colony thrive by ensuring a constant supply of offspring.
